Winter Weather Affecting Many School Schedules

“I think there is a lot of frustration by the winter already and we’re only in mid February,” said Michael Doerrer with Frederick County Schools.
FREDERICK COUNTY, Md. - Warm up that snow blower and get your shovel ready, another winter storm is expected to hit the four-state region this week. This will be the fourth major storm in the last month that will have a major effect on schools.

“I think there is a lot of frustration by the winter already and we’re only in mid February,” said Michael Doerrer with Frederick County Schools.

Each school district allots a certain number of snow days per year. This year most of the counties in the area have already used all of their days.

Doerrer said Frederick County actually exceeded their amount.

“We budget for five snow days. This year we’ve exceeded that number by two,” he said.

Doerrer also explained the school board will meet Wednesday to discuss possibilities to make up the snow days.

"Right now there are several options on the table,” said Doerrer. “Including using Presidents Day.”

The Washington County School Board has already announced they will use Presidents Day as a make up snow day. Several parents voiced their frustrations about that decision on WHAG’s Facebook page.

“I don’t think you’re gonna find one solution that please everybody," Doerer adds.

Vicki Allen said she does not mind make up snow days. Allen said her sons safety is the most important thing.

“I don’t want my child to get on a bus or get into an accident, or walking on the sidewalk and slip,” explained Allen.

More school closures are expected as the storm moves in.  We have more information on our website; just click on the School Closings tab on the homepage.
