Families Get Back to School Help

Project Big Love put a lot of smiles on kids' faces at its back to school community event Saturday.

FRANKLIN COUNTY, PA- Project Big Love put a lot of smiles on kids' faces at its back to school community event Saturday.

About 5,000 people showed up in Mont Alto, PA to get free groceries, medical screenings, school supplies, and even hair cuts.

“We put together 15,000 backpacks, and 2,000 pairs of shoes, and about 65,000 pounds of groceries, and about 4,000 hot lunches today to help families come out and have a day and relax and enjoy it and then get prepared to go back to school,” said Shon Duty, Project Big Love coordinator.

Thirty churches and about 30 local businesses from Franklin, Adams, and Washington Counties teamed up to support local families in need.

“It's giving my kids a lot of fun and at the same time it's saving us money,” said event participant Carrie Geesaman.

One of the most popular tents at the event was the one handing out free shoes. The organization is hoping to double or triple the amount of shoe donations next year.

“These kids going back to school with a new pair of shoes is a big deal. It helps them have another level of confidence,” said Duty.
