FRANKLIN COUNTY, Pa. - Police say a 69-year old man is dead after crashing into a tree over the weekend.

According to Smithsburg EMS, the accident happened around 9:30 a.m. Sunday morning on Marsh Road off of Leitersburg Road in Franklin County.

According to EMS officials, Smithsburg EMS and Leitersburg Volunteer Fire Company were first called the scene, as it was dispatched as in the Leitersburg area. During response to the accident, it was determined the location was not in Maryland but across the state line in Franklin County, Pennsylvania.

Officials say numerous companies regularly respond on what is known as 'mutual aid' or assisting other counties, particularly Washington County. In this instance, the call was received by Washington County, MD 911. When the accident was determined to be in Franklin County, units from Pennsylvania responded to assist as well.

There are often many factors as to why this mix-up in location can occur. Police said they continue to investigate what lead to this deadly crash. WHAG's Bejoy Joseph will have more in this story tonight at 11 p.m.
