15 year-old injured in Winchester Fire

Fire officials in Frederick County, Virginia said a 15-year old was injured in a house fire along Hickory Trail in Winchester on Monday.
WINCHESTER, VA -  Officials with the Frederick County Department of Fire and Rescue said a 15 year-old male was injured in a house fire that happened on Monday.

According to a press release, the teen suffered minor burns to his shoulders and was taken to Winchester Medical Center following the blaze at 1204 Hickory Trail.

Officials said when they arrived on scene, the single family home was fully involved.  Due to the extent of the fire, crews performed exterior attacks on the fire.  The bulk of the fire was knocked down after approximately 90 minutes of crews arriving.

The cause of the fire has been determined to be the chimney which ignited combustible materials within the wall surrounding it.  The damages are estimated to be around $80,000, and crews are considering the structure a total loss.

Officials said they want to use this fire to remind the public of the importance of annual chimney maintenance and inspection by certified chimney sweeps.

Fire and rescue units from North Mountain, Gore, Round Hill, Gainesboro, Star Tannery, as well as Frederick County Battalion 10 Duty Officer and the Fire Marshal's office all responded to his incident.
