Former Senator Harry Byrd Jr. died in his home in Winchester at 98 years old. Byrd was the oldest living former senator in the country.
WINCHESTER, VA - Former Senator Harry Byrd Jr. died in his home in Winchester at 98 years old. Byrd was the oldest living former senator in the country.

Senator Byrd was born in Winchester, served in World War II and also served 17 years in Washington as a U.S. Senator. Byrd was a democrat turned independent who pushed for fiscal restraint in Washington. He was also a staunch supporter of segregation.

He became a state senator and newspaper publisher as a teenager.

Governor McDonnell said in a news release on Tuesday, "This is a sad day in the commonwealth. We lost a good and decent person and dedicated public servant."

McDonnell has ordered all flags to fly at half-staff on Friday and Saturday in memory of Senator Byrd.
