Further Details into Martinsburg Homicide

Martinsburg Police are investigating a late night homicide where a man killed his wife with a hammer.

MARTINSBURG, W Va. - Martinsburg Police are investigating a late night homicide where a man killed his wife with a hammer.

It happened late Wednesday night in an apartment on Pendleton Drive when police say a domestic incident turned fatal. Police report that Rickie Greenfield Jr. confessed to killing his wife, Jill Greenfield by beating her with a hammer while she was in bed.

"Homicides they occur using various weapons and obviously a hammer can be utilized in this manner," said Sgt. Scott Doyle with the Martinsburg Police Department.

Rickie Greenfield drove his two children to a residence before going to the Rumsey Terrace apartments outside of Martinsburg after his wife was killed.

"We had a family member who arrived on scene and was able to speak with Mr. Greenfield on the phone and at that point he directed us to where he was at," said Sgt. Doyle. "Officers from within the county then responded to that location and arrested him without incident."

Greenfield was arrested and charged with first degree homicide then booked into the eastern regional jail.

"As far as anybody should be concerned about anything with it, it was an isolated incident," said Sgt. Doyle.

WHAG talked to neighbors who say they're shocked something like this could happen and say they never observed any problems with the family previously.

Police say the two children are safe. Right now, they don't have a motive and it's an ongoing investigation as they figure out why this happened.
