HAGERSTOWN, Md. - They aren't silver, but you can "hear them ringing," at the Valley Mall, as the Washington County Commissioners rang away in a bell ringing marathon for the Salvation Army's Red Kettle Campaign.
"We are a country of volunteers who go out of our way to do things for people less fortunate and people who can't really help themselves," said Washington County Commissioner William McKinley.
Commissioners took turns ringing the bell, while greeting shoppers to raise funds for those in need this holiday season.
"Happy shoppers, getting them to smile, giving hugs. So we've had a great day," said Washington County Commissioner John Barr.
The Red Kettle donations provide meals and warm beds to those who need it most in the community.
As shoppers came by to give their donations, some expressed how much the act of giving means to them.
"I can't even describe it. I mean that's what you should do as a person if you ca give then give, that's what I feel," said Jamie Fogle, a local resident.
The sound of kindness, for Washington County.
