Hedgesville wins Class AAA State Championship 33-32 over George Washington

The Eagles defeat George Washington 33-32 to win their 1st State Title since 1970.  Philip Largent hits the second free throw after being fouled with 4.7 seconds left. Q.J. Peterson has 14 points in the game.

The Hedgesville Eagles are West Virginia State Champions after defeating the George Washington Patriots 33-32 in the Charleston Civic Center.

In the fourth quarter, Chris Shields scored a bucket with 5 minutes left to make it 28-27 George Washington.  With 3:20 left, Q.J. Peterson hit a three pointer to tie the game at 30.  Chris Shields hit a bucket with 1:30 left to give the Eagles a 2 point advantage.  Jean Eddy for the Patriots tied the game at 32 with 1:17 left.  Hedgesville would hold the ball for the last possession and Philip Largent was fouled with 4.7 seconds left.  Largent hit 1 of 2 free throws and George Washington missed their last attempt.

The Eagles were led in scoring by Q.J. Peterson with 14.  Jean Eddy led George Washington with 12.

Hedgesville was down 7-0 after the 1st quarter but responded in the 2nd quarter to lead 15-13 at the half.  George Washington was up 23-20 after the third quarter.

They become the first seven seed to win the title and the first to lose its sectional title game to go on and win the state championship.
