Most times tourists who stay in Rochester for a night or even two do not have any problem finding a place to stay. According to Rochester Hotel Association President Michael Marsch, hotels on average have about a 56 percent occupancy rate.

"More often than not we are not full," he said. "Our local hotel industry is I'd say struggling given the considerable supply of hotel rooms in the Monroe County area."

Despite the supply, Marsch says the PGA championship is creating a shortage August 5th through the 11th. In fact, the RIT Inn & Conference Center on West Henrietta Road is the only hotel we found still taking single night reservations on August 10th. Like most other hotels in the area, the rate is higher than normal. Most rates double during the final rounds of the championship. RIT is asking for $169 plus tax that Saturday night, compared to their $129 any other time.

"It's a great opportunity for us to make some great strides from a revenue generation perspective," Marsch stated.

Most hotels, like the Radisson Rochester Riverside, sold out for the final round during the first quarter. The Comfort Suites of Rochester and The Country Inn & Suites by Carlson Rochester Henrietta are the only game in town and they require a three-night minimum. Rochester's tourism agency, Visit Rochester, says the rate increase is economics 101.

"Try to buy an airline ticket at Christmas or try and buy an airline ticket at Easter, it's supply and demand and whatever the market will bring," CEO Don Jeffries said.

The bottom line is that if you or someone you know is still looking to book a hotel the week of the PGA, your best bet might be in nearby buffalo or Syracuse.
