Local Art Gallery Showcases a "Youthful Vision"

The Berkeley Art Works Gallery is hosting a new exhibit featuring prints from young photographers in Martinsburg.

MARTINSBURG, W Va. - The Berkeley Art Works Gallery is hosting a new exhibit featuring prints from young photographers in Martinsburg.

"I'm a photographer myself," said Rip Smith with the Berkeley Art Works Gallery. "I look at photography critically and I can tell you there's not a bad image in here."

Organizers say the Youthful Visions exhibit is being held at the Berkeley Art Works Gallery and it's showcasing original work from students in the Martinsburg Boys and Girls Club photography program.

"This year we went out to Savannah and out to Utah with the students and then a lot of the photographs are local. Some are down in Washington, D.C., but there are a number of prints in this exhibit which were shot here in Martinsburg," said Pat Murphy with the Martinsburg Boys and Girls Club photography program.

There are 30 different student works in the gallery and some of them will be in the National Image Maker's competition next year.

"A lot of people don't realize the caliber of work these students do," said Murphy. "They win a nation competition, they're competing with clubs from all over the United States, and even the world, as far as the military bases."

And it's the first time the gallery's worked with the Martinsburg Boys and Girls Club.

"We wanted to give the kids the recognition for this kind of quality work deserves a display in a quality environment," said Smith.

Smith hopes to continue this partnership in the future.

"And as long as we're here and we have these walls available, I think there'll be a place for the Boys and Girls Club photography at least some point during the year," said Smith.

The Youthful Visions exhibit is free to the public and runs until September 1. For more information about the Berkeley Art Works Gallery, check out their website by clicking here
