Local Couple finds $50K In A New Piece of Furniture

A couple is Cumberland and one of their associates found a wad of cash when they picked up a new piece of furniture to sell at the Queen City Flea Market. WHAG’s Shayna Halper tells us just what they found.

CUMBERLAND, Md. - Carol and David Hall purchased a mantle fireplace from a local woman, and when they were unloading it to sell it at the Queen City Flea Market they made a shocking discovery.

“I couldn't believe my eyes,” said Carol Hall.

“This is the first time we found something real giant like that. We've been doing this four years here at the Queen City Flea Market, but really we've been doing it for 20 years,” said Daivd Hall.

“All our heads came together real close and we were hovering over this tiny bag,” said Frank King.

A tiny bag that showed them good things can come in small packages. It was packed with money. They say they started to count, and found $35,000 in $100 bills alone. The trio says they didn’t count the other stacks, made up of $50 and $20 bills, but that there was sure to be at least $50,000 in the bag they thought had a shaving kit inside.

“I called the lady and said uh, we just found a bundle of money and it belongs to you and you have to come down and get it so I called her back two hours later,” said Carol.

Finally, the money was collected and now many have one question for the couple, why they didn’t keep the cash.

“A lot of people asked us that and we knew it was her mom’s money. It was her money,” said David.

The mantle is still at the flea market looking for a new home.
