Winchester, Va. - Becker's Hospital Review has recently cited Winchester Medical Center as one of the top 100 cardiology programs in the country.
"It’s a recognition that the whole hospital and the whole community should be very proud of," said Edward R. Kofsky, M.D., the Medical Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery.
And the recognition didn't arrive out of thin air. The criteria necessary to receive an award like this has been years in the making.
"I’ve been here now, probably 19 years, starting off with a lab that essentially had two rooms in it,” said William H. McLaughlin, M.D., Medical Director of the Cardiac Cath Lab. “We've grown to five now."
Hospital staff believe that just because Winchester Medical Center services a more rural area of the country, doesn't mean that the quality of care should be any less than exemplary.
"I think we've earned a high reputation here in Winchester," said J. Cullen Hardy, M.D., the Medical Director of Noninvasive Cardiology.
"They count on us to do the right things and they know we will,” finished McLaughlin.
To do right by each patient, the cardiology department meets at least once a week to discuss difficult cases and review their core measures of care.
“For probably 18 years we’ve had our own ‘Q & A’ process where we review cases and read problems,” McLaughlin said. “And this was generated by the cardiologists actually, as one of the few initial departments to do this on their own, in monitoring the quality of the work that we do."
And monitoring that quality of care takes an enormous amount of team work.
"I think the teamwork and the team approach is what's made us most successful,” said Kofsky.
And the team agrees.
"You can't do something as complex as caring for heart attacks or doing bypass surgery without having a team approach,” finished Hardy.
Becker's Hospital Review selected the top hospitals based on their Medicare quality of care scores, previous awards and contributions to cardiovascular care and research.
Alongside their cardiology achievement, some recent recognitions of Winchester Medical Center include:
- 2013 Mission Lifeline Platinum Performance Achievement Award (American Heart Association)
- Three Star Rating for Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (Society of Thoracic Surgeons)
- Top five Hospitals in the state of Virginia (US News & World Report)
- Grade “A” (Hospital Safety Score)
