Locals embrace tree recycling

After Christmas ends, many people in the Four State region are managing to stay green by recycling their trees.
Frederick County, Va. - "Tree cycling is kind of like waste reduction in a sense," said Steve Frye, Landfill Manager in Frederick County.

"Tree-cycle is an opportunity for you to recycle your cut Christmas tree. It's a chance to give it a second life," seconded Gloria Puffinburger, Solid Waste Manager from Frederick County Public Works.

Tree-cycling is a nationwide program that not only gives local residence a place to throw out their tree, but a chance to give back to their communities as well.

"It is a very popular program across the country, and the only thing we ask is that all the decorations be removed, and all the lights, all the tree stands,” said Puffinburger. “And we also ask that if you have an artificial tree that you'd like to get rid of, that you not put it in the pile with the live trees."

Depending on your county, tree-cycling starts as early as December 26th - and goes until the end of January. All counties we looked into offer free drop-off options to participating facilities. Curb-side pick-up options however are more selective, and may charge a small fee in order to take your tree off your hands.

In Frederick County, Christmas tree waste accounts for about 20% to 25% of all yard waste collected throughout the year.

"Part of that's a lot of the people that sell the trees, when they get done at the end of the year, we get their waste trees on top of that,” said Frye.

Once the bare trees are collected, officials put them through the grinder, and turn the tree into mulch.

"The mulch is used by the landfill as alternate daily cover - which is just covering refuse at the end of the day. It's also mixed with sewage, sludge and turned into top soil which we also use for planting grasses," said Puffinburger.

And for those who are sad to see the holidays go, tree-cycling is a way to keep the Christmas spirit lingering just a little longer.
