Making New Year's Resolutions into Reality

“So just live your life everyday and don’t think about one year from now. Think of a goal that you can do today and just fulfill that goal everyday,” said Carolyn Lanning, fitness instructor.
HAGERSTOWN, Md. - One of the most common New Year’s resolutions is getting in shape, but the commitment that starts in January doesn’t always last throughout the year.

The South Pointe Fitness Center in Hagerstown is one of many gyms that may see a boost in membership at the beginning of the year due to fitness resolutions.

“One of the number of resolutions is always to lose weight and that is also one the biggest reasons that people join a health club,” said Heather O’Neill, owner of South Pointe Fitness Center.

But as the year continues, the number of members that come back start to get smaller.

“Unfortunately things get in the way. People get busy with other things and their resolutions start to fall off. Not everyone’s, but lots, too many. Sometimes there are some people that stick around. All year round,” said O’Neill.

If keeping that goal is important, O’Neill says being accountable for your workout is key.

“One of the best ways for people to stick around and stick to a routine is to find a kind of accountability. Either a friend or a trainer or just even coming to a place where you know you feel welcome,” she said.

As the chilly weather may make it harder to get to the gym, right here in Hagerstown there are many ways to stay fit, such as fitness challenges and group exercises.

“So just live your life everyday and don’t think about one year from now. Think of a goal that you can do today and just fulfill that goal everyday,” said Carolyn Lanning, fitness instructor.

O’Neill says setting a routine can make it easier to start and even exceed those fitness goals throughout the year.

“It’s not that bad once you get moving. Once you get that alarm set and get in the door or get out the door. Just set your mind to it and get going,” said O’Neill.
