Man Charged with Firing Rifle on VFW Property

Officers with the Front Royal Police Department arrested a man over the weekend after they say he was shooting his rifle on Veterans of Foreign Wars' private property.
FRONT ROYAL, Va. - Officers with the Front Royal Police Department arrested a man over the weekend after they say he was shooting his rifle on Veterans of Foreign Wars' private property.

Officer Kevin Orndorff said he was called to the area of North Royal Avenue on Saturday October 19 around 3:35 p.m. for the reports of shots being fired. He says Mark Twain Patrick II, 27, of North Carolina, was firing a Ruger .22 cal. Rifle with a scope at a log. 

Officer Orndorff said he advised Patrick that he was on private property and that it was illegal to shoot a firearm within town limits. He also observed three fishing boats on the Shenandoah River, several people fishing on the banks and Poe's Campground, as well as the VFW in view. 

Further investigation revealed Patrick was convicted of a felony offense in North Carolina. 

Patrick is charged with discharging a firearm in town limits, reckless handling of a firearm, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, trespassing and possession of a schedule III narcotic. Officers say the Ruger. 22 cal. Rifle, three 25 round magazines and miscellaneous .22 cal. ammunition were seized upon his arrest. 

Police say Patrick is currently being held without bond. He's due in court November 26, 2013.
