Man Flown to Hospital in Police Cruiser-Skateboard Accident

The Frederick County Sheriff's Office says a Frederick man was flown to the hospital Tuesday after being involved in an accident with a police cruiser.
FREDERICK, Md. - The Frederick County Sheriff's Office says they're investigating a crash involving a police corporal and a skateboarder.

The accident happened around 8:15 p.m. Tuesday in the intersection of Spring Ridge Parkway and Knollwood Drive.

According to the sheriff's office, Cpl. Corey Borns was on routine patrol on Spring Ridge Parkway traveling northbound, while Andrew J. Kotzbauer, 20, of Frederick was also riding his skateboard southbound on Spring Ridge Parkway.

As Cpl. Borns was turning left onto Knollwood Drive, Kotzbauer collided with the police cruiser in the intersection, according to police.

Further investigation determined Kotzbauer's skateboard had been speeding downhill toward the intersection at Knollwood Drive. Deputies say as Cpl. Borns was turning left onto Knollwood Drive, Kotzbauer exited the bike lane into the intersection and struck the cruiser in the right front bumper area.

Deputies say the investigation also determined Cpt. Borns was driving slow, and was able to stop his vehicle within four feet.

Kotzbauer was flown to R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma where he continues to be treated.

Police say the investigation is ongoing, but have concluded Kotzbauer to be at fault and caused the crash.
