Man in Custody After Helicopter Search, Scare in Front Royal

The Warren County Sheriff's Office says a Front Royal man is in custody Monday morning after a scary incident involving a shotgun over the weekend.
WARREN COUNTY, Va. - The Warren County Sheriff's Office says a Front Royal man is in custody Monday morning after a scary incident involving a shotgun over the weekend.

On Sunday, Oct. 6, deputies say they responded to a house on T-Bird Drive after receiving a call from a woman that her husband was suffering from depression and had left the house and entered the woods with a firearm. Deputies say while speaking with her, a gunshot was heard near the home.

Deputies say they took cover and the Warren County Sheriff's Office Special Operations Team and Crisis Negotiations Team responded to the area. They say the team was able to secure the house and began a search of the area. A helicopter from the Virginia State Police was requested, approved and launched from Lynchburg. Virginia State Police Troopers also responded to the scene to assist.

As the team searched, members say the man in question approached a deputy with a shotgun, disassembled and his arms raised.

The man was taken into custody without incident and transported to Warren Memorial Hospital for an evaluation. He was later taken to a mental health facility for treatment.
