Martinsburg Man Kills Wife with Hammer

Officers say they forced entry into the apartment and found a woman’s body with severe trauma to the head and a bloodied hammer nearby.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Police are investigating after a Martinsburg man attacked and killed his wife with a hammer Wednesday night.

Police say they responded to the 300 block of Pendleton Drive around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday at an apartment complex.

Officers say they forced entry into the apartment and found a woman’s body with severe trauma to the head and a hammer covered in blood nearby.

An investigation revealed that Rickie Greenfield Jr. had murdered his wife Jill with a hammer while she was in bed.

Police say Rickie called a family member to inform them he had dropped his two children off at a residence and he was currently at the Rumsey Terrace apartment complex located just outside of Martinsburg. The family member also said Greenfield wished to turn himself in to authorities and said he would come out upon their arrival.

Greenfield was located at the apartment and was charged with first-degree homicide.

Following the arrest, statements were taken from witnesses who say Greenfield had contacted them in the aftermath of the homicide. Witnesses say Greenfield informed them that he just snapped and killed his wife. Jill Greenfield's body has been taken to Morgantown, W.Va., for an autopsy.

Greenfield is currently being held at Eastern Regional Jail.
