MERCERSBURG, Pa. - One Mercersburg Police Officer was recognized over the weekend for his work on two burglary cases.

Mayor James C. Zeger presented a letter of appreciation on Saturday, Sept. 28 to Officer Robert M. Wertz for his exceptional investigative skills in solving two 2012 burglaries.

In a written release officials stated, the two residential burglaries and thefts happened between Sept. 22 and Oct. 18 of 2012. They say the incidents resulted in an estimated $75,000 worth of jewelry and silver stolen. Police say each crime scene had a strong potential of yielding DNA of the people responsible for the crimes.

Officials say through Officer Wertz's investigation, he identified a potential suspect who had worked in one of the houses as a health care provider for the homeowner's late husband three years prior.

The second burglary, Office Wertz was able to discover the criminals were searching regional obituaries for potential homes to burglarize. Officials say Officer Wertz's investigative skills, along with DNA results lead to the arrest of the two individuals responsible for the crimes.
