MHS Football Team Heads to State Championship Game

There's excitement in the air in Berkeley County as Martinsburg High School's football team will go after its fourth straight state football championship this weekend.
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Three time state champions, the Martinsburg Bulldogs are in Wheeling again this year for the AAA State Football Championship.

Despite the rainy weather, the community came out in full force on Friday morning to send-off the team. Fans say they're pumped up about what could be a record-breaking win.

"This is a tradition and we love the bulldogs!" said Debby Brown.

Bulldogs' fans are loyal, many of them following the team all the way to Wheeling Island Stadium every year.

"Oh yes," said Nancy Jenkins. "I've gone to Wheeling for the past four years."

WHAG spoke with senior defensive end, Troy Walker, right before the team's sendoff. Walker said the team is thankful for continued support.

"It's been a great ride," said Walker. "Everyday was just tough. Everyday was its own adventure."

An adventure that's paid off for the high school football team. A win on Saturday would make them the first and only team to win a state title four years in a row.

"I'm very proud of all the boys here at Martinsburg," said Brown. "They worked so hard, and the coaches, they're just very committed to what they do and they're trying to keep the tradition of going to Wheeling alive."

The the State Championship Game will be held at Wheeling Island Stadium on Saturday at noon against the Huntington Highlanders.
