FREDERICK COUNTY, Md. - Members with the Frederick County Bureau of Investigation have arrested a Mt. Airy man in connection to numerous armed robberies in the area.

Police say Joshua Nathaniel Payne, 20, of Mt. Airy, Md., is charged with two Frederick County armed robberies, along with similar charges out of Carroll County and Howard County.

The first set of armed robberies were reported from the Mt. Airy Shell Station in the 600 block of Lakeview Drive. The first occurred on November 27, where employees reported a man entered the store with his face covered and a handgun displayed. He was able to escape with cash. The second incident happened on December 6, where workers say a man entered the store with a knife displayed. This time Payne did not have his face covered and store employees recognized him as a regular customer.

According to police, Carroll County and Howard County were investigating similar incidents involving a similar suspect. A cooperative investigation between Frederick County, Maryland State Police, Westminster, and the Howard County Police Department worked together to identify Payne as the suspect.

On December 7 Payne surrendered himself to authorities and provided a statement to investigators that confirmed his participation in call the incidents being investigated by Frederick, Carroll and Howard County authorities.

Payne is currently being held without bond at the Carroll County Detention Center. Once released from Carroll County, Payne will be served with the Frederick County warrants, police say.
