JEFFERSON COUNTY, WV - Two people are dead after a three-car crash in Ranson.

The accident happened Tuesday night around 9:30 p.m. on Route 9 near Flowing Springs road.

Police say 35-year-old Ruben Gutierrez-Villegas of Martinsburg was driving a Honda Civic westbound on the eastbound lanes of Route 9.

Chief William Roper with the Ranson Police Department says Villegas' car ran into a Chevy Blazer driven by Laura Ferguson from Harpers Ferry. She had two children in her car, ages three years and six months. All three of them were flown to Fairfax Hospital in Virginia for treatment.

Ferguson's other passenger, 58-year-old Patricia Harris from Harpers Ferry, died on the scene.

Police say Villegas died after being flown to Fairfax Hospital.

Two other people in a third vehicle were also injured. The driver swerved to avoid being involved in the initial crash, but he ran into the Blazer. Investigators say they were taken to Jefferson Memorial Hospital with minor injuries.

Police don't know if alcohol or drugs were a factor.
