Officials Announce Major ARC Broadband Grant

Officials announced on Friday they’ll be awarding Garrett County a major ARC broadband grant.

MCHENRY, MD- Officials announced on Friday they’ll be awarding Garrett County a major ARC broadband grant.

The grant was announced Friday at Garrett College.

The $250,000 grant is in an effort to bring expanded broadband access to underserved areas in the county.

Congressman John Delaney, economic development leaders, college staff, and other local and state officials participated in the announcement.

Officials say the $250,000 broadband grant awarded by ARC, matched by $250,000 from the Board of County Commissioners of Garrett County, will quicken business growth and opportunity in the county.

They say the grant allows Garrett County to begin its first phase of a wireless broadband network, which will bring access to 90 percent of homes in businesses over the next several years. Officials say currently around 3,000 homes and small businesses do not have adequate broadband service.

The county expects to bring broadband availability to the remaining residences and businesses by 2016.
