People Hit the Slopes for Opening Day at Whitetail Resort

"We're very excited, this is a very early opening for us, it's only happened twice in the history of whitetail so this is our third time. We're very, very excited about this early opening," said Katrina Gayman, Director of Marketing and Sales at Whitetail Resort.

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - It's beginning to look a lot like ski season!

It's only November, but the weather's been cooperating for snow lovers.

The Whitetail Resort in Mercersburg just opened the trails for the first time this season Friday morning.

"We're very excited, this is a very early opening for us, it's only happened twice in the history of whitetail so this is our third time. We're very, very excited about this early opening," said Katrina Gayman, Director of Marketing and Sales at Whitetail Resort.

Whitetail officially opened with near perfect conditions. It was 39 degrees around noon and there was sun peaking out through clouds, and of course, freshly made powder.

"We had great snowmaking temperatures last weekend, which allows us to open today," said Gayman.

And Katrina says even though they aren't anticipating record turnout this weekend. They usually get upwards of 800 people for opening weekend, and they're expecting only around 500 this weekend. But they still have die-hard ski and snowboard lovers coming down the slopes.

"Normally they're only open for two months, so hopefully this will give us an extra month of skiing," said Bruce Dion of Hedgesville, W.Va. He’s been skiing for four years now.

Even six and a half year old, Noah said he's siked to come back and go boarding again with his dad.

And his favorite part?

"The rails," Noah Reasbeck of Martinsburg, W.Va. said. This is his second season snowboarding with his dad, who skis.

And if people are interested in learning how to ski or snowboard, Whitetail employees said there will be specials run until December, 23.

But for those who are already pros, they’re just waiting for the rest of the trails to get dusted with snow.

"Conditions are good, more trails would be nice, but they're going to have them all open by next week I believe," said Bruce Dion.

Whitetail has seven trails open, a mix of beginner and intermediate, and they're actually hoping to get all 23 trails open by Christmas.
