Petition Underway to Expand Deer Hunting with Rifle in Southern Frederick Co.

"The health issues with deer include deforesting the forest, eating all the leaves as high as they can reach, making paths that create erosion and clog our streams and waterways, plus deer carry disease," Shreve (R) said.
FREDERICK COUNTY, Md. - A Frederick County, Maryland commissioner has started a petition to expand deer hunting with a rifle in the southern part of the county

Commissioner Billy Shreve would like a law to be passed in the Maryland General Assembly.

Currently, Maryland law prohibits hunting with a rifle in southern parts of Frederick County.

Shreve says the deer population is getting out of control, and hunting with a rifle could help prevent that.

"The health issues with deer include deforesting the forest, eating all the leaves as high as they can reach, making paths that create erosion and clog our streams and waterways, plus deer carry disease," Shreve (R) said.

He's going to hold a public meeting on the issue in December.

The public hearing will be held on Monday, December 9, at 7:30 p.m., at Winchester Hall.
