Police Charge Father, Girlfriend in Fatal Child Abuse Case

The boy died on New Year's Eve at Children's National Medical Center in Washington D.C.
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- A three-year old boy is dead after police say his father allegedly beat and burned him.

West Virginia State Police were called to a home on the 200-block of Joshua Drive in Martinsburg on New Year's Eve because the boy had gone into cardiac arrest. The trooper was told by emergency crews that the boy had severe head trauma and scarring all over his body.

The boy's father, James Mauldin was arrested after Mauldin's girlfriend told police Mauldin abused the boy a few days prior to the incident on New Year's Eve.

The boy was taken to Children's National Medical Center in Washington D.C. where he died from his injuries.

James Mauldin has been charged with felony child abuse and neglect, and will now face additional charges of child abuse resulting in death.

He is currently being held without bond at Eastern Regional Jail.

Mauldin's girlfriend, Jasmine Dawkins, has also been charged with felony child neglect, and giving false information to police about injuries to a child. She is also being held at Eastern Regional Jail on $25,000 bond.
