Police Investigate Shooting in Martinsburg

Several units responded to the 500 block of North Queen Street and found a man at the underpass with a gunshot wound to his back lower torso.
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Police in Martinsburg are investigating a shooting that happened Wednesday afternoon in the area of North Queen Street. 

Officials say around 2:22 p.m. a patrol officer heard multiple gunshots in the area of North Queen Street and Pennsylvania Avenue. Several units responded to the 500 block of North Queen Street and found a man at the underpass with a gunshot wound to his back lower torso. 

The man was transported to Berkeley County Medical Center where he was taken in for surgery. 

Police say they found several fired shell casings behind 535 North Queen Street. 

Witnesses say the victim and another man had been fighting, and both fired shots at each other. They say after the fight, the victim fled on foot and was stopped by police. The second man also fled the scene in an unknown direction. 

Officers say they conducted a search of the area and located a handgun with rounds that were consistent with recovered casings. 

Martinsburg Police say this investigation is ongoing. They're asking anyone who might have more information on this incident or can identify the second man to call them at (304)-264-2100.
