Police: Man Lost More Than $1,000 in Wire Theft Fraud

Police say the victim wired money to Puerto Rico after the caller threatened to hurt the victim's wife.
FRANKLIN COUNTY, Pa. - Police are investigating a scam where they say a Franklin County man was conned into wiring money overseas.

According to Pennsylvania State Police in Chambersburg, the victim wired money to Puerto Rico after the caller threatened to hurt the victim's wife.

The man told police the scammer told him his wife had been in a car accident, and he withdrew more than $1,000.

Police say the victim's wife was never in any danger. They're urging residents to beware of people urging you by phone, email, or mail to tranfer cash for what seems like something urgent.

Police add victims are often asked to wire money to help a relative, and the caller is often in a foreign country.
