"Porch Fest" Preview

Residents of a local historic neighborhood are working together to organize a music festival right in their front yards.

HAGERSTOWN, Md.Many of the houses on Prospect Street in Hagerstown were originally built in the early 1800’s.

"Children of local industrialists in the Hagerstown area began to develop this ridge of Hagerstown which became Prospect Street at a later point in time,” says Kim Winders, one of the Porch Fest planners.

Now, residents of the Historic Heights neighborhood want to showcase the historic houses by putting on a musical event called Porch Fest.

"We thought it would be a great opportunity for us to showcase local musical talent as well as some of the architecture and history of our three block area of Prospect Street," says Winders.

More than 20 bands will be playing in front of the houses along Prospect Street for the event. One local band, Matinee @ Midnight, put on a preview show Saturday to promote Porch Fest.

Neighborhood residents say the event is also an opportunity for community bonding.

"To be able to do it in our neighborhood so we can just walk out our front door, walk up and down the street, enjoy some good food that will be prepared by a local business, and just fellowship with neighbors," says Winders.

The event is free and open to people of all ages. It will take place on September 14 from 2-6 p.m.
