New Transportation Center Kicks Off To a New School Year

A dedication ceremony was held in honor of Frederick County, Virginia's new transportation facility located behind Armel Elementary School.
FREDERICK COUNTY, VA - As this week marks the beginning of a new school year for many counties, it marked a memorable day for the Frederick County Public Schools system in Virginia.

A dedication ceremony was held in honor of the new transportation center, a newly built home for school buses and cars.

It was a project that has been in the planner for well over 20 years and now, it has finally become a reality. The new center is located behind Armel Elementary School on Route 522, south of Winchester.

"This is a community effort; two boards working together collaboratively. The Board of Supervisors and the school board so this is a joint community effort, something that we're very excited about," says Dr. David Sovine, superintendent of schools.

The old transportation center was near James Wood High School but it was lacking space.

"We have rooms for a conference room. We have a place we can meet with parents. In the old facility, we had a room that was so small that we had to have three outside sea containers," says John Grubbs, director of transportation.

Construction began about two years ago and it was a project that cost the school board over $14,000.

The administration building at the new center is Frederick County's first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified facility.

The new facility also provides energy conservation, financial savings, and will even be able to hold parking for 295 buses and 350 cars and light duty vehicles.

"Our employees are able to work in a comfortable, conducive environment for paying close attention to the details of the mechanics of working on a school bus, and make sure our buses are in tip top shape," adds Sovine.

It may have been a timely and costly move but it will save money and fuel in the long run.

The first day of school for Frederick County students will be Monday, August 26th.
