Sen. David Brinkley Appointed New Md. Minority Leader

The Frederick County senator has almost 20 years of experience in the Maryland General Assembly, beginning in 1994 with the House of Delegates.
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Maryland Senate has a new minority leader, and he's from Western Maryland.

Senator David Brinkley of Frederick County has been elected unanimously for the position by the Maryland Senate Republican Caucus. Brinkley replaces former Senate Minority Leader E.J. Pipkin of Cecil County, who moved to Texas.

"Being the minority leader will be a great challenge because we're coming into the last session of this term, and I think that there's a lot of disgruntled people in Maryland," Brinkley said. "Certainly in the senate and in the minority caucus is supposed to voice some of those concerns."

Brinkley is now the top Republican in the Maryland Senate. He's got almost 20 years of experience in the Maryland General Assembly, beginning in 1994 with the House of Delegates.

"I've worked very closely with Senator Edwards and Senator Shank. They were very supportive of me doing this," Brinkley said. "The hope and expectation is that we'll be able to work together to try and ensure the interests of Western Maryland are addressed in Annapolis, and at the same time, trying to figure out what's best for Maryland households."

Brinkley hopes to use the position to benefit Western Maryland. He already has some ideas about the major issues he'll push in the next session, which starts in January 2014.

"We have to worry about job creation. We have to worry about keeping the jobs that we already have," Brinkley said. "The majority part in Annapolis has increased the rain tax, they created the rain tax, and they've increased other taxes, including the gas tax. We have to ensure that our part of the state is adequately taken care of."

Two Western Maryland legislators now serve in leadership positions in the Maryland General Assembly. Delegate Michael Hough, who represents Frederick and Washington Counties, is the new assistant minority leader in the Maryland House of Delegates.
