Shepherd Clinches Share of WVIAC Title

Shepherd clinches at least a share of the WVIAC Title with its 34-23 win over Glenville State.

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va
. - Freshman running back Allen Cross (Elkridge, MD/Long Reach) rushed for three touchdowns and senior outside linebacker Dominic Tolson (Forestville, MD/Central) had a 45-yard interception return for a touchdown with 46 seconds left in the game to lead Shepherd University to a 34-23 win over Glenville State in WVIAC football action at Ram Stadium on Saturday. The win assured Shepherd a share of the WVIAC title.

Glenville State took a 7-0 when Demetrius Quarles picked off a pass and went 59 yards for a touchdown with 13:02 left in the first quarter.

The Rams tied the game at 7-7 when senior quarterback Bobby Cooper (Davidsonville, MD/South River) teamed with sophomore wide receiver William McKenzie (Upper Marlboro, MD/Frederick Douglass) with 3:02 left in the first quarter. Redshirt-freshman kicker Ryan Earls (Stevensville, MD/Kent Island) added the extra point.

Shepherd took a 14-7 lead when Cross scored on a two-yard plunge with 7:48 left in the second quarter.

The Pioneers tied the game at 14-14 when Justin Feagin connected with a wide-open Robert Jiles on a 63-yard scoring play.

Glenville State took a 17-14 lead on a 34-yard field goal by Colston Bayless with 10:00 left in the third quarter.

Shepherd gained a 20-17 advantage when Cross scored on a three-yard run with 8:51 left in the fourth quarter. Earls' point after attempt was blocked by Clifford Mason.

The Pioneers took a 23-17 lead with 1:59 left in the game as Feagin and Jiles teamed on a 36-yard scoring strike. Senior cornerback Keon Robinson (Fairfax Station, VA/ Lake Braddock) blocked the extra point attempt.

Shepherd took the lead for good as Cross scored his third touchdown of the day on a three-yard run with 1:38 remaining to cap a three-play, 67-yard drive that took only 16 seconds.

Tolson picked off reserve quarterback Tony Guidugli in the game's final minute and returned it for a score to seal the win.

Cooper hit on 15-of-24 passes for 248 yards for the Rams. Feagin connected on 17-of-33 passes for 213 yards for the Pioneers.

Senior wide receiver Larry Lowe(Stafford, VA/Brooke Point) led the Shepherd receiving corps with six receptions for 114 yards. Freshman wide receiver Billy Brown (Gaithersburg, MD/Gaithersburg) added three catches for 51 yards. Jiles had five catches for a game-high 128 yards to lead State.

Cross rushed 17 times for 67 yards to lead the Rams. Rahman Lee rushed 12 times for 40 yards to lead the Pioneers.

Shepherd had 368 yards of total offense, while Glenville State had 287. Shepherd limited the Pioneers to just 74 rushing yards.

Tolson (Forestville, MD/Central) had 10 tackles (eight solo), while senior linebacker A.J. Parrish (Madison Heights, VA/Amherst County) added eight stops (seven solo) to lead the Shepherd defense. Devin Cain and Nate Ingersoll each had 10 stops to pace the Pioneers.

Shepherd improves to 7-2, 6-1 in WVIAC play, while Glenville State falls to 5-5, 5-2. The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host Fairmont State at noon for Hall of Fame Weekend/Senior Day.
