Small Fire Reported at MCI in Hagerstown

The blaze broke out around 9:11 a.m. near the upholstery shop on MCI-H grounds on 18601 Roxbury Road. It was reported the fire started in the duct work.
HAGERSTOWN, Md. - Multiple fire and rescue crews responded to Maryland Correctional Institution Thursday morning for the reports of a fire. 

The blaze broke out around 9:11 a.m. at the Maryland Correctional Enterprises Upholstery Shop at MCIH on 18601 Roxbury Road in Hagerstown. Officials say the plant employs inmates who make furniture. 

It was reported the fire started in the duct work. Officials say a spark from an inmate sanding a piece of wood may have ignited sawdust in the collection system. They say sprinkler system worked immediately. 

Officials say 54 inmates working in the plant were moved to another MCE plant nearby. No injuries were reported. 

About seven to eight fire and rescue stations arrived on scene. The small blaze was extinguished shortly after around 9:52 a.m.

Officials say damage was minimal and the plant should be open on Friday. 

MCIH is reported to be operating as usual.
