OAKLAND, Md. - The State Fire Marshal is investigating a powerful house fire that broke out Thursday morning, leaving one family without a home.

The blaze broke out around 4:33 a.m. at a house on 141 Edens Ridge in Oakland.

WHAG spoke with Deputy Bruce Bouch earlier on Thursday who said the blaze was accidental, and the fire was caused by the homeowners immproperly disposing ashes from a wooden stove. He says this incident should be looked at as a warning to homeowners.

Officials say the owners had cleaned the wood stove and discarded the ashes outside the house before going to bed. Fire officials say hours later the owners awoke to smoke detectors going off, and were able to get out safely.

Fire and EMS crews responded from Deer Park, Oakland, Deep Creek, Accident, Gorman, Terra Alta, Southern Rescue Squad, Md. State Fire Marshall FM-24, Southern Rescue and Garrett County Roads. Crews say the house is a total loss, as well as the nearby garage and three vehicles.

They say as the cold season starts to begin, its fire like these that happen all too often.

"And often times you have a house that has vinyl siding and it can very quickly travel up the side of the house, enter through the beams of the roof line and actually be burning up inside an attic space long before anyone is even aware the fire is actually occurring," said Deputy Bruce Bouch, Director of Public Education and Media Affairs with the State Fire Marshal's Office.

About 30 firefighters responded to the scene Thursday morning. It took crews about one hour to put out the fire. Estimated damages to the home are around $395,000. The family is currently being assisted by the American Red Cross.
