Two Men Arrested in Attempted Copper Theft

Hagerstown City Police arrested two men Tuesday morning after they say the two broke into the basement of a building and tried to steal copper piping.
HAGERSTOWN, Md. - Hagerstown City Police arrested two men Tuesday morning after they say the two men broke into the basement of a building and tried to steal copper piping. 

It happened around 2:52 a.m. Tuesday at an apartment building on 37 E. Antietam Steet in Hagerstown. 

Police say they spotted Richard Wayne Mathis Jr., 30, and Travis Wayne Miller, 32, both of Hagerstown, exiting the basement of the building. Both men were detained and arrested for burglary and malicious destruction of property. 

A search warrant of the basement showed pieces of copper pipe had been cut from the apartment's oil tank, water and natural gas lines. Police say tools used to cut the copper pipe were also found.
