UPDATE: Hearing Set in Jefferson County Homicide Investigation

Deputies with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office say Matthew Lee Gilbert turned himself into police Thursday, December 5, 2013, after Ann Chapman, also known as Ann Pennington, was found dead inside a room at the North Gate Motel.
JEFFERSON COUNTY, W.Va. - A hearing has been set for the Jefferson County man accused of murdering his girlfriend at a local motel this week. 

Deputies with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office say Matthew Lee Gilbert turned himself into police Thursday, December 5, 2013, after Ann Chapman, also known as Ann Pennington, was found dead inside a room at the North Gate Motel. 

Police say the two checked in on December 1, 2013. Shortly after police believe a fight broke out where Gilbert used excessive force to beat Chapman to death. They say the Jefferson County man left the scene immediately, and Chapman's body was not discovered until early Thursday morning by the hotel staff. 

Gilbert is charged with second-degree murder and is being held at Eastern Regional Jail without bond. 

Deputies say an autopsy is expected to be completed on Friday, December 6 by the the WV Medical Office in Morgantown. 

They say the case remains open pending the return of the autopsy and other evidence being examined. A preliminary hearing is expected to be held in Jefferson County Magistrate Court on Thursday December 12, 2013.
