UPDATE: Three-Alarm Apartment Fire Causes Extensive Damage

First arriving units say they encountered heavy fire conditions in a first floor apartment that extended up the exterior of the building to the second and third floors and roof.
FREDERICK, Md. - On Tuesday, Frederick County Fire and Rescue Officials released more information into the devastating apartment fire that left multiple families without a home. 

Frederick County Fire and Rescue responded to the three-alarm blaze around 2:48 p.m. Monday at Crystal Park Apartments in the 800 block of Blakely Court. First arriving units say they encountered heavy fire conditions in a first floor apartment that extended up the exterior of the building to the second and third floors and roof. 

Fire officials say the bulk of the fire was put out at 5 p.m. and crews worked to extinguish hot spots, monitor conditions and conduct overhaul. The fire caused extensive damage to six units and the American Red Cross offered help to residents displayed by the fire. 

One firefighter and one resident were injured in the incident. Fire officials say that firefighter was taken to an area hospital, and the resident refused medical treatment. 

Officials say the cause of the fire remains under investigation. Initial damage estimates are unavailable at this time. 

Firefighters will be returning to the neighborhood Tuesday evening from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. offering free smoke alarms, replacement batteries and safety information to residents.
