ALLEGANY COUNTY, MD- Officials with the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office have arrested a 24-year-old volunteer firefighter for intentionally setting a house on fire last week.

Denzil Halbritter Jr. is facing several charges including arson, after investigators say he started a house fire on the 19000 block of Big Lane Avenue in Midland on July 22.

Halbritter had been a volunteer firefighter with the Midland Volunteer Fire Company. Officials say first responders found Halbritter unconscious on the kitchen floor the morning of the fire. He was taken to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center in critical condition from smoke inhalation injuries.

It took about 60 firefighters to put out the fire, which caused about $50,000 worth of damages.

Halbritter is being held at the Allegany County Detention Center.
