Water Main Break in Allegany County

Many Allegany County residents are without water, after a main break on a major roadway in Cumberland.
CUMBERLAND, Md.--Many Allegany County residents are without water, after a main break on a major roadway in Cumberland.

Officials say the 12-inch main broke on Willowbrook Road around 4:30 pm, the water has been shutdown since. They say along with a number of homes, an assisted-living facility and Allegany College dormitories are without water, but Western Maryland Regional Medical Center does have access. Officials think an extreme temperature change is to blame for the situation, going from freezing temperatures to nearly 50 degrees over the past week.

"Luckily we have a small stream down there over the hill, it runs into," John Rae of City of Cumberland Water Department. "It's nice to get to it quick so it doesn't cause any accidents, or any flooding."

The Maryland State Highway Administration is also assisting in the repair of the water main break.
