Williamsport Community Remembers Samantha Kelly

Hundreds of locals took part in a fundraising event in memory of Samantha Kelly, a Williamsport high school student and athlete, who passed away last year in a car accident on her way home from the senior prom.

WILLIAMSPORT, MD- Hundreds of locals took part in a fundraising event in memory of Samantha Kelly, a Williamsport high school student and athlete, who passed away last year in a car accident on her way home from the senior prom.

"It started out with rain this morning, so we said it's Sam crying because she can't be here. But the sun came out so it's a good day," said Emily Crabtree, the Williamsport High School girls volleyball coach.

Two of her former volleyball teammates organized the "Spikes for Sam" event to raise money for the Samantha Kelly Memorial Scholarship Fund.

They say she was a positive, fun-loving person who is still an inspiration to the community.

"Sam was an inspiration to everyone around us. Every day I live to be a little bit more like Sam," said Samantha’s friend Brynne Kirsch.

Samantha's volleyball coach says the turnout for the event exceeded expectations.

"An event like this just shows that she touched people in more than just the Williamsport community. I mean there are people from Washington County all over that were touched by Sam in some way," said Crabtree.

A total of twenty-three teams competed in the tournament, playing the sport Samantha loved the most.

I know she made the sun come out today,” said Crabtree.
