Williamsport Remembers History as a Canal Town

The C&O Canal has shaped the town of Williamsport since its arrival in 1834.

WILLIAMSPORT, Md.— The C&O Canal has shaped the town of Williamsport since its arrival in 1834. The town’s historic role as a transportation hub is what locals celebrated Saturday.

Those at the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Park got an in-depth look at Williamsport’s past at the 37th annual "Canal Days" event.

"It’s just a fun place for people who haven't been here,” said lead park ranger Kelly Fox. “They come right off the highway and discover the canal that was a major part of the industrial revolution in this part of the country.”

In addition to several exhibits, visitors were able to take canal rides while learning about the town's ties to commerce. Park rangers say Williamsport still remains proud to be known as a canal town.
