Woman Flown to Shock Trauma After Tractor Trailer Accident on Rt. 40

According to Maryland State Police, the accident happened just west of Hagerstown and closed U.S. 40 for nearly six hours.

WASHINGTON COUNTYMD - A woman was flown to R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore after a collision Monday afternoon involving a tractor trailer. 

According to Maryland State Police, the accident happened just west of Hagerstown and closed U.S. 40 for nearly six hours. 

Police say the tractor trailer, driven by Nathan James, 63, of Union, NJ, was traveling west on U.S. 40 and had attempted to make a left turn onto Maryland 144. James then turned into the path of a car, driven by Kristin Russo, 28, of Annandale, Va., traveling eastbound.  

The collision sheered off the front end of Russo's car, which came to rest at the front of the tractor trailer.

The extent of Russo's injuries are unknown at this time. The driver of the tractor trailer was not injured in the crash. 

State Police say the crash is still under investigation and charges are pending.
